three

Happy birthday, beloved V.  Three years ago, your mom and I were trembling new parents, awestruck and a little terrified at the tremendous responsibility for you that we’d been given.  Today, we celebrate three years of learning, growing, joy, and answered prayers.  We love you.

childhood on film

Today is my un-birthday… so permit me yet another shamelessly self-indulgent family post, will you?  I came home to a delightful package waiting on my doorstep.  I used to receive boxes of this type quite often, but ever since the advent of digital photography, they’ve become increasingly rare.  That’s right: the fine folks at Philadelphia...

It was a joy to see you guys and little Pie. I heard a woman speak once that had twins and only one was born alive. She said that we forget the beauty of a baby’s cry until it’s not there anymore. Thank you to you and the other photographers involved Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

    Ryan -

Congrats to you and your wife. Piper is beautiful, just beautiful. I was so excited to hear that you named your baby, “Piper”. My best friend and Matron of Honor (who you will meet at my wedding in Oct) is a fellow “Piper” and I have always loved her name.

As I look through your blog, it creates all the excitment that I had when we first met. I can’t wait for you to meet Jamie and for you to photograph our wedding on 10-8.

Talk to you soon. Have so much fun with your new bundle of joy!

    Cheers,
    Carrie

the power of an image

Granddad died when I was 10. Grandmom joined him about 11 years later. I loved them dearly, and miss them a lot. I don’t have many photos of them, and the ones I have tend to be formals taken at weddings (suits and ties, dresses and flowers). Great pictures to have, certainly, but that wasn’t...

    Very nice post, Ryan.
    Well said too.
My Mom-Mom died the day after Christmas this year.
Just a few short weeks after she turned 90 years old.
My family and I spent a few hours after the funeral going through lots and lots of old pictures and reliving many memories we had shared together.
I left that night with two small, old B&W pictures of my (at the time) 18 year old grandmother and 23 year old grandfather. They had take these photos of each other running in the fields one day in Valley Forge park.
This was before they were married, before they were my dad’s parents and long before they were Mom-Mom & Pop-Pop. Just two simple snap shots of my grandparents about to begin a life together.
They are now two of my most cherished photos of all time.
And I am so happy that they were taken.

We don’t appreciate our pictures when we create them nearly as much as we do years latter. That is the reason I am a photographer as well. I don’t think I understood that until the last few years. Every time I hear a story like yours I see how valuable a photo can become.

what i did over christmas vacation

The holidays are now over, 2011 is well underway, and I’m excited about what the coming months will bring. (New website, new direction, new baby!) In the meantime, here’s a short show-n-tell about the Christmas break. It consisted mainly of caring for sick kids, the re-emergence of our family’s pink bunny costume, and teaching toddlers...

grandma sager

She’s 90 years old, staying with us for a few days. It’s a little chilly in our house at the moment, and she pulled a chair up to the radiator to read for a while.
